A reply to the comments about the HRC

Thanks to most people who commented on yesterday's post. This is my response, but first, I hosted Kathleen Turner and Gloria Feldt for authors@google today. People should buy their book.

Scott -

To call my comment stupid is a bit premature. My comment was not about what YOU would tell our brothers and sisters about a non-inclusive ENDA. My comment was directed at the HRC community and those who supported the watered down version - what can anyone, myself, or you included, say to a person who has transitioned, or is transitioning, and has been fired or will be fired at work because of the transition journey? There is no federal protection for them. You seem to think that change can come from within the HRC organization - ask the transgender board members (former) how to do that. How can change come about when, if your statements about HRC leadership knowing they would pull the rug long before November, the organization speaks out of both sides of its mouth? Yes, HRC has advanced our cause, but this issue has tarnished their image. Has your disgust with their actions regarding ENDA caused you to contact Joe and voice your displeasure? Have you spoken with board members? Have you enlisted your friends who hold the same dismay to call HRC? It's all good to voice your displeasure on a blog and hope people will act - but fact of the matter is protesting and making phone calls to the HRC leadership will bring about the change you mention much quicker. If our voices remain silent, the stones WILL cry out. Complacency equals death. Call HRC and tell them what you think!
